8th Annual McCeney March through Historic Laurel
Honoring community activist, LHS Board Member, and avid walker Jim McCeney and featuring the return of the “Cold Oven Pound Cake Challenge” in memory of Mildred Awkward
was held on Saturday, September 30th, 2023 - Thank you!
Jim McCeney is remembered for his commitment to our community, to Laurel's history, and to making Laurel a better place. He holds a special place for the Laurel Historical Society, where he served as President, Treasurer, and Chairman of the Board for many years.
This year, we invite you to learn more about the history and heritage during a self-guided walking tour through Historic Laurel. Start at the Laurel Museum and follow a 1.25 mile route to end up at the Municipal Pool Meeting Room for pizza, refreshments, and the return of the "Cold Oven Pound Cake Challenge!"
9:30 am - 11 am: Registration and pick up March materials
Check in at the Laurel Museum to complete registration and pick up your map.
10 am – 12 pm: Self-guided walking tour through historic Laurel
Visit any or all of the eight stops along a scenic 1.25 mile route. Most of the terrain is level, but there are a few hills to climb from Ninth Street to the Museum. You may also drive the route as parking is available at all of the interactive stops. Follow the route in any order and visit as many of the four stationary stops as you wish to find out about Laurel’s history from the mid-19th century to today! Interact with volunteers at the following four interactive stops for in-depth history:
12 pm - 1 pm: Closing reception and lunch for March participants followed by Pound Cake Challenge
12 pm - 4 pm: Laurel Museum open with current exhibit “It’s All Laurel: City Limits and Beyond”
Proceeds of the March will go towards educational programs at the Laurel Historical Society and scholarships for Laurel-area students.
